Heavy Metal Madness: Making the Best of a Dysfunctional Work Team

Last column I laid out how, through a fluke in timing and an addiction to eBay, I ended up with a driveway full of hot-metal printing and typesetting equipment -- the start of a new hobby. After a lifetime of working in high-production environments, I have learned that the physical tools are actually secondary, even though that's where most people start. What matters more to getting the job done is the strength of the workforce and how they interact with each other.

Chat with the Design Technology Expert

In a recent entry on his Real World Illustrator blog, design software expert Mordy Golding recalled an AOL Vector Forum he participated in way back in the day. "Every Tuesday evening," Mordy wrote, "the Vector Forum would have a live one-hour chat, where we'd pick a topic and discuss all things vector. I learned so much from those chats, and I was also able to share what I was learning with others."

Design How-To: Cropping Photos for Impact

This story is taken from "Before & After" Magazine.

Every designer at one point in time has to work with a lackluster image -- a headshot of a company CEO, for example. You have to include it in your layout, but how to make it interesting?

Scanning Around With Gene: Maintaining Your Car and Your Home

The latest service woes of Toyota made me oddly nostalgic for the days when it was assumed that most cars would be in the shop frequently and everyone had a relationship with their dealer or mechanic. In 1960, if you got 75,000 miles on a car you were doing pretty good. My last Honda didn’t even require a major service until 110,000 miles. There's no question that cars have become dramatically more reliable, and "service" now refers mostly to the occasional trip to JiffyLube for an oil change.

Scanning Around With Gene: Birds of a Feather

The world seems to be divided into two types of people: those who like pet birds and those who find them creepy, sad, or unnatural. I always put myself in the latter category, but in recent years I found myself sharing a living space with two parakeets and a cockatiel. This, while not exactly turning me into a bird lover, made me realize that they can be sweet little pets.
